African Union Chairperson His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa will this afternoon, Friday 09 October 2020, participate in a virtual Joint World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund High Level event on “Mobilising with Africa”.

The Joint World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund High Level event will focus economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic which continues to inflict a devastating blow to Africa.

In the matter of just a few months, health systems have become severely strained, economic activity has stalled, and hard-won poverty reduction and development gains have suffered heavy setbacks.

Continued international support is imperative to address the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 and begin to lay the foundation for green, inclusive recovery in Africa.

Today’s event brings together African policymakers, international institutions, bilateral development partners, and representatives from the private sector.

The engagement provides a platform for African policymakers to highlight the acute challenges faced in their fight against the pandemic and efforts to mount a crisis response and promote a strong and sustainable recovery; take stock of promising country experiences and support provided by the international community in Africa’s fight against the pandemic; and agree on additional concrete measures from both public and private sectors to fill the large medium-term investment and financing needs that countries are facing.

President Ramaphosa will deliver remarks from 17h00.
