Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to officiate at the send-off ceremony of Team South Africa to the Commonwealth Games
Pretoria - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, supported by Minister of Sports Fikile Mbalula will tomorrow, Tuesday 15 July 2014 preside at the official send-off function at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria in honour of members of Team-SA scheduled to leave for Glasgow Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.
During the function, Deputy President Ramaphosa is also expected to hand-over the South African Flag to Team South Africa’s Flag bearer. The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July - 03 August 2014. South Africa will send 155 athletes, men and women who are expected to contest in sixteen sporting codes namely: aquatics, athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, judo, lawn bowls, netball, para-powerlifting, rugby sevens, shooting, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
It is expected that Deputy President Ramaphosa will convey President Jacob Zuma, the government and the people of South Africa’s best wishes to Team South Africa. As government we are confident that the nation will support our men and women as they strive for gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The games will serve to further unite the nation in the year that we celebrate 20 Years of Freedom.
Following this function, Minister Mbalula and the President of SASCOC will later on Tuesday evening host a dinner for the athletes at Birchwood Hotel, in Boksburg.
