President Ramaphosa to deliver the eulogy at the official funeral of Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu

President Cyril Ramaphosa will this morning, Saturday, 1 January 2022, deliver the eulogy at the Special Official Funeral - Category 1 of the late  Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu.

The Archbishop Tutu passed away on Sunday, 26 December 2021, at the age of 90.
 
President Ramaphosa has honoured Archbishop Emeritus Tutu by declaring his funeral a Special Official Funeral - Category 1.
 
Archbishop Tutu was a globally respected theologian, anti-apartheid campaigner and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He lived a distinguished life and  made an outstanding contribution to the struggle against apartheid and in defence of human rights globally.
 
The funeral proceedings will take the form of a Requiem Mass in St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town.
 
The distinguishing features of a Special Official Funeral – Category 1 include ceremonial elements by the South African National Defence Force.  On this particular occasion and based on the late Archbishop’s wishes, the SANDF ceremonial content will be limited to the handing over of the National Flag to Mam Leah Tutu.
