President Ramaphosa to launch Schools Sanitation Project
President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Tuesday, 14 August 2018, officially launch the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) Initiative at the Sheraton Hotel, Pretoria.
SAFE is a Department of Basic Education-led initiative in partnership with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which responds to the significant sanitation challenges facing some of the country’s poorest schools.
The initiative follows the President’s call for plans to eradicate unsafe schools and ablution facilities, and for an audit and plans to deal with all learning facilities with unsafe structures.
As the President committed in the State of the Nation Address in February 2018, the plan to eliminate unsafe ablution facilities at schools will entail civil society consultation and participation.
The breakfast launch will seek to mobilise resources and support from various sectors of society including big business and non-governmental organisations around the enormous task of alleviating infrastructure backlogs, primarily for schools serving the poor.
