President Ramaphosa to participate in Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Summit – 1 November 2018

Pretoria - President Ramaphosa will tomorrow, Thursday, 01 November 2018, open and participate in the National Gender-based Violence and Femicide Summit. It will take place at St Georges Hotel in Centurion.

President Ramaphosa will be joined by the National Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng in a demonstration of the commitment of all arms of the state to eradicate gender-based violence.

President Ramaphosa had appointed his Special Advisor to work with the Department of Justice to lead the process of convening the Summit- in response to continued high levels of violence and femicide against women and children.

The Summit aims to create a platform of engagement to:

• Reflect critically on initiatives to date and identify areas of improvement;
• Outline a roadmap to a South Africa free from gender-based violence and femicide;
• Pave the way for the creation of mechanisms and processes for effective coordination,
• Planning and implementation beyond the Summit;
• Establish a commitment to resourcing and accountability.

Over a thousand delegates comprising civil society organisations, traditional leaders, academics, faith based organisations, labour, business, development agencies, media and advertising sector are expected to attend. Youth, women from both rural areas, urban areas and across the country will also be in attendance.
