Ms Nomasonto Evelyn Motaung is a young South African who is proud to be actively involved in the politics of the country as a long-standing member of the African National Congress (ANC).
In March 2023, the 6th Administration of the South African Government welcomed her appointment as the Deputy Minister in The Presidency. In this role, she was assigned Executive Oversight Authorities to the Media Diversity and Development Agency (MDDA), Brand SA, as well as the Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), being an activist, community developer, and community leader that she is.
Ms. Motaung is born and bred in Namahadi, Frankfort in the locality of Mafube municipality under Fezile Dabi District in Free State. She started her community and political activism at a young age by volunteering within the ANC structures from the age of secondary education. She was fortunate to be groomed through the principles of the movement and rose to serve in the ANC Youth League Regional Executive Committee (ANCYL REC) of Fezile Dabi in 2006, where she remained a member until 2010.
The ANC recognised her leadership and organisational abilities and included her in the ANCYL Provincial Task Team, where her leadership skills as an activist shone through for the organisation to embrace her outstanding role towards the achievement of its key objective of the creation of a united, non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society, by electing her to serve as an ANC PEC Member in 2023 (for the Free State Province) - a position she still holds within the organisation.
Ms Motaung was also appointed to serve as the National Coordinator of the ANC National Youth League Task Team in March 2023 towards the ANCYL Elective Conference of June 2023 that delivered the current leadership of the young lions.
Ms Motaung’s career is just as colourfully decorated. She has held the position of First Secretary to the Speaker of the Council at Mafube Local Municipality, and was promoted to the position of Public Participation Officer (PPO) in 2008. During her tenure as a PPO, Ms Motaung successfully coordinated synergies between the Municipality and the Community of Mafube, which led to her appointment as the Office Manager in the Office of the Speaker in the same Municipality in 2010. In 2016, she was elected as the Speaker of the Mafube Local Council, a post that she held from 2016 to 2019 before she was elevated to serve as a Member of Parliament (MP) where she served under various portfolios of Cabinet to date.
The Deputy Minister holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Management and is currently studying towards completing her Master’s in Public Management through the Regenesys Business School.
Since she joined The Presidency, Ms. Motaung has participated in the launches of the Blouberg FM community radio station in Bochum, Limpopo; Maputaland Community Radio station in Jozini, KwaZulu Natal; Vukani Community Radio Station in Cala, Eastern Cape; and the GCIS Budget Vote in Parliament May 2023.
