Deputy President Mabuza urges the new SANAC Board of Trustees to uphold principles of good governance

Deputy President David Mabuza today, Tuesday, 10 September 2019, held a successful meeting with new Board of Trustees of the South African National Aids Council (SANAC) at Tuynhuys, Cape Town.

The Deputy President thanked the member of the Board for availing themselves to serve in this capacity in support of the country‘s collective response to HIV and AIDS.

The Board of Trustees which is the legal entity of SANAC appointed by the Deputy President, brings together government, civil society and the private sector in the fight against HIV, TB and STI’s in South Africa. It is also responsible for corporate governance of the Secretariat.

In line with its established objectives the Board receives funding from government and a number of donors among these, is the UNAIDS, Global Fund, and PEPFAR in support of the HIV/Aids programme.

Deputy President Mabuza has urged the Board to uphold the principles of good governance and accountability in the exercise of their fiduciary duties.
“Our country has been lauded for its sterling efforts in reaching the 90-90-90 United Nations Aids target ahead of the 2020 deadline and for its comprehensive HIV/Aids response programme. Such a collective response to HIV/Aids should focus more on prevention of new infections”, said Deputy President Mabuza.

The Deputy President lauded the Eshowe model where the collective response has reached a 90-94-95 target.

Deputy President Mabuza further noted that according to the latest UNAIDS 2019 Global AIDS Report that South Africa bore the highest burden of HIV globally, wherein 7.9 million people are living with HIV, of which 4.4 million were on antiretroviral treatment.

“This SANAC leadership must especially guide the interventions we make today, in improving the prevention of HIV infection among adolescent girls and young women because of the extremely high rate of infection that has been noted in this section of the population,” he said.

The Deputy President said that he was looking forward to regular engagements between the Chairperson of the Board, CEO and the Office of the Deputy President to keep abreast of the strategic governance issues relating to the Trust and the broader SANAC stakeholders.
